The 3rd Annual Wild Hog Chili Run
3/13/2010
The 3rd Annual Wild Hog Chili Run was held Saturday, March 13th in Exeter. The event, sponsored by the Exeter Lions Club, raises much needed funding for local youth events.
The run, held the second Saturday of March, is the brainchild of Steve and Sandy Cordeiro, whose daughter was a member of the local youth singing group, the Exeter Madrigals. When their organization was selected to perform at Carnegie Hall three years ago, Steve and Sandy approached the Lions Club with the concept to raise the money needed for the kids to travel and participate in a once-in-a-lifetime performance at the legendary venue. After successfully achieving their initial goal, and with participation doubling every year, the Wild Hog Chili Run has raised almost $15,000 since.
The concept for the run was simple, yet unique. Combine a pleasant motorcycle run through the scenic central Sierra foothills, with a pro/am-class super-serious chili cook-off. Throw in some live music; a 50/50 raffle; and chili dogs (of course), and the event is a natural hit!
This year's chili cook-off featured 11 entries from individuals and local restaurants including Exeter's Yukon Jack's; The Springville Inn; and The Firkin and Hound of Visalia. As one of the judges, it was extremely difficult picking a winner, as each of the offerings were distinctly flavorful with a wide variety of ingredients and "secret sauces".
After a performance of the national anthem by the Exeter Madrigals, the run left Exeter, rounding Charter Oak Drive toward its first destination and chili judging stop at the Runway Cafe at the Woodlake Airport. From there, it was out Highway 216 for the second round at the Lemon Hill overlook on Kaweah Lake. With a little chill in the wind, and clouds stacking up against the hills, we made our way through Yokohl Valley and headed south on Highway 65 before veering through Frazier Valley to Springville for the third round of judging and sampling. From there, it was back down Highway 190 past Lake Success, through Porterville, and back to Yokohl Valley.
The run made a rare pass over Rocky Hill before descending back to Exeter for the final round and award celebration at the Veteran's Memorial Building. April Skye of 99.7 Classic Rock emceed the raffle drawings and the chili cook-off awards. Music was provided by The City Boys of Exeter. Event sponsors included 99.7 Classic Rock, Culligan Water, The Firkin & Hound Restaurant, Fully Loaded Customs, Gizmo's Hot Dogs, Marc's Upholstery & Auto Detailing, NSE Insurance, Sports Nut, Inc., Tule Trash Company, Vallarta's Restaurant, and VIP Pizza - Exeter.
After two attempts in the previous years, first place award and bragging rights went to Daddy's Chili, offered by Corey and Maddy Cordeiro of Exeter. Second place went to last year's champ, Mark Journey. Third place was awarded to Michael Wight.
A big shout out to all of the volunteers for their hard work in putting the event together and a big thank you to Steve and Sandy for being such great hosts. We look forward to coming back next year and being involved with these kinds of great events!
